Enabling Automatic Production of Mobile Phones
Automation Increased, Costs Reduced
Project
A world-renowned smartphone maker was seeking to expand its production capacity by increasing domestic and overseas manufacturing plants and their levels of automation. Assisted by Advantech’s IPC solutions, the automation project has multiplied the throughput of their facilities, while cutting manpower by 75 percent.

The company’s manufacturing base in Taiwan originally had two facilities operating semi-automatic production lines. That is, humans, robots and some other automatic devices were deployed along a production line to carry out subassembly—adding screens, cameras, antennas, and microphones or speakers to semi-finished products one after another; at the end of the line they completed the products; and several human operators were stationed to perform functional tests on assembled parts.

Now this company was establishing a new facility in their Taiwan manufacturing base. The goal was to implementnear full automation, with increased use of robots instead of human operators to carry out automatic tests. Even before the new facility was completed, its output had already surpassed the combined total of the two existing facilities. This company was also establishing new facilities overseas which would also implement near-full automation. It is estimated that a near full automatic facility can save up to 75% on manpower compared with the current highly labor intensive facilities.

Requirements
dot Ultra-high reliability and stability
dot High performance computing capability
dot Total cost reduction
dot Excellent integration
dot Floor space efficiency
dot Global logistics and technical support

System:

When it comes to industrial computers for automation applications, reliability and stability are extremely important, especially when they are for manufacturing pricy consumer electronics products like smartphones. In these facilities, machines operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week; robust and reliable computers are a must.

For this mission-critical automatic smartphone manufacturing and testing application, Advantech provided two system solutions: one was an IPC-510 chassis carrying a PICMG 1.3 form factor single board PCE-5126, which boasts superior computing power and strong I/O capacity to perform multifunctional operations; the other is an IPC-7132 chassis matched with an AIMB-767 ATX motherboard, which features outstanding computing capability in a small-footprint system that saves floor space and cost.

The IPC-510 + PCE-5126 is so powerful that each unit connects to more than one robot and corresponding AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) device to carry out critical assembly tasks and perform testing at the same time.

Meanwhile, the IPC-7132 + AIMB-767, which is compact enough to be hidden under the assembly line work surface, is used to control other assembly tasks such as automatic bonding and also to record and save production data.

Conclusion:
In the world’s competitive smartphone market, all the big brands make an effort to come out with exclusive, dazzling new features. Price, however, is also always among the top consumer concerns. The reduction in production costs helps to raise the performance to cost ratio of products, increasing their appeal to consumers.

The aforementioned automatic assembly and testing systems running on Advantech’s computing platforms have helped our customer to eliminate manual handling errors in production process and also improved their yield rate, reducing their labor costs and increasing output.

This customer chose Advantech because Advantech not only provided products with a high performance to cost ratio, but also backed those products with the world’s only global IPC service network offering extensive and intensive support. Wherever our customers’ manufacturing bases go, Advantech is able to help.
